ICC World Cup ENG vs WI Highlights: Root-led England canter to victory over hapless WindiesIt was an all-round performance from Root

Resounding win for the hosts

What can you say? Root starred with both bat and ball to take England to a comfortable 8-wicket win over West Indies, who looked deflated throughout. The only positive for them will be the innings that Nicolas Pooran constructed, in a calm and mature way. Their bowling was horrific as they seemed to not know anything apart from the short ball, which England dealt with easily. Root and Bairstow put on 95 runs for the opening stand, Woakes then put on 100 with Root to essentially snuff out any chance of a West Indies win. You cannot really sum up a game more subtly than that.It has been a pleasure to get you the live updates, do join us tomorrow for a double header. It is Sri Lanka vs Australia and South Africa vs Afghanistan. Hope to see you then, Till then, goodnight!

Holder is back. Will he concede the winning runs himself?

33.1 Holder to Stokes, NO BALL, FOUR, Stokes jumped up to play this past mid off and it is a free hit. Seems like Holder wants to finish it quickly too

33.1 Holder to Stokes, FOUR, its all over! He whips this full ball past mid on and brings up a thumping victory for England!

Woakes c sub (Allen) b Gabriel 40(54)

Ben Stokes in at no.4

31.6 Gabriel to Stokes, WIDE, down leg. Another useless appeal by Gabriel

31.6 Gabriel to Stokes, DOT.

We are back after the drinks break. Was unneeded really, what are the teams going to discuss really? ICC really needs to rethink their rules a bit. Tweak them a bit maybe when the situation is this obvious? Reminds me of the time they took a dinner break when India needed a handful to win against South Africa in the ODI series last year. Baffled everyone!

Too mainstream perhaps?

Chris Gayle is on to roll his arm over and he does a floss forthe crowd, who are lapping it up with glee! He is a superstar, isn't he?

20.1 Gayle to Woakes, DOT, played to point

20.2 Gayle to Woakes, DOT, worked to short mid wicket

20.3 Gayle to Woakes, 1 run, driven aerially of the back foot to long on

20.4 Gayle to Root, DOT. Gayle does an animated DRS sign to the umpire, just having fun with the crowd. They are losing, might as well do it with a smile, huh?

20.5 Gayle to Root, DOT.

20.6 Gayle to Root, DOT, Root misses an easy boundary, hits it straight to short fine leg and Gayle has a look at him, in jest of course. As if asking- why hasn't that gone for a boundary?

Carlos Brathwaite into the attack.

16.5 Gabriel to Woakes, DOT, short again, Woakes does not connect with his ramp

16.6 Gabriel to Woakes, DOT.

14.4 Gabriel to Bairstow, OUT, caught off a short ball! How often do you see that with Bairstow. He went for the booming cut, but it was a pacey one, took the top edge and went into the bucket hands of man mountain, Carlos Brathwaite

Bairstow c Brathwaite b Gabriel 45(46)

They lost then, can they win today?

13.1 Holder to Root, DOT, drives it towards mid on

13.2 Holder to Root, DOT, steered it to backward point, says no to the single immediately

13.3 Holder to Root, 1 run, length on his body, Root defends it to mid on and sets off for the single

13.4 Holder to Bairstow, DOT, short and pulled with timing, straight to short mid wicket though

End of first powerplay and England are well on course for a comfortable victory. Physios out there to tend to Russell and Bairstow, who both fell over after the last ball. Russell is leaving the field in fact.

11.1 Holder to Root, DOT, defends this length delivery towards cover

11.2 Holder to Root, 1 leg byes, on leg stump, catches Root's pad in his attempt to glance it, and they take the leg bye

7.3 Russell to Bairstow, DOT, Russell limps back to his run-up. His knees are not in good shape

7.5 Russell to Bairstow, DOT, he drives down the ground without timing and Russell dives to try and stop it. Why make it worse, Dre?

7.6 Russell to Bairstow, DOT.

Shannon Gabriel is into the attack.

6.1 Gabriel to Root, 2runs, swivels and short fine leg does well to stop the boundary. Saved two there

6.2 Gabriel to Root, DOT.

6.3 Gabriel to Root, 2 runs, short and Root cuts it through backward point, good running to get back for two

6.4 Gabriel to Root, DOT, length ball, defended on the back foot by Root

6.5 Gabriel to Root, DOT, short and that skid through, hits Root on the helmet, no harm done though

6.6 Gabriel to Root, WIDE, short again and it is too high this time, according to the square leg umpire

6.6 Gabriel to Root, 1 run.

5.1 Thomas to Bairstow, FOUR, full and straight, Bairstow merely pushes this dead straight past the stumps to the boundary

4.3 Cottrell to Root, DOT, arches back slightly to steer it to backward point

4.4 Cottrell to Root, DOT, back over the wicket now, it is short and wide, cut straight to point

2.5 Cottrell to Bairstow, DOT, yorks him but Bairstow digs it out well

2.6 Cottrell to Bairstow, WIDE, goes for the bouncer, wrong line though, down leg it goes

2.6 Cottrell to Bairstow, DOT.

Oshane Thomas from the other end

1.1 Thomas to Bairstow, DOT, hops up, looks to steer it down, does not get it past

1.5 Thomas to Bairstow, 2 runs, short again, Bairstow cuts in the air toward third man, it falls short of him and they take two

1.6 Thomas to Bairstow, DOT.

So it will be Root to open with Bairstow in the absence of Roy. Morgan also walked off mid innings and England will be hoping they don't need to go far down the order to chase this fairly non-threatening target. West Indies have pace in their ranks but I don't think England will be a troubled a lot.

Cottrell with the new ball and he has one slipto boot. Bairstow to take strike.

0.1 Cottrell to Bairstow, DOT, bumper first up and that is not given as a wide. Seemed to go down leg

0.2 Cottrell to Bairstow, DOT, that was a full toss, Bairstow wanted nothing to do with it though, leaves it alone

44.3 Wood to Thomas, 1 leg byes, wants to pull this one away, goes off his arm to third man

44.4 Wood to Gabriel, OUT, bowled him! Full and straight, best way for a tail ender and Gabriel cannot connect with his wild hoick. Excellent bowling from England!

Gabriel b Wood 0(3)

43.1 Archer to Brathwaite, DOT, well directed bumper again, Carlos just moves his head away at the last instant

43.2 Archer to Brathwaite, DOT, short again, looks to pull but he removed his eyes from the ball. Archer has them rattled

43.3 Archer to Brathwaite, DOT, another short one, he cannot connect with his pull again

43.4 Archer to Brathwaite, OUT, gone this time! Brathwaite wants to slog again, maybe got a faint edge and Brathwaite is disappointed. Rightly so, because it came off his arm, and he has no reviews left to appeal it. Oh replays suggest he got an outside edge too so good decision by Dharmasena

Brathwaite c Buttler b Archer 14(22)

Shannon Gabriel is the last man in on his WC debut. He has to face Archer first ball and what a nightmare start that is!

43.5 Archer to Gabriel, DOT, defends the length ball down the ground

43.6 Archer to Gabriel, DOT.

England going all out attack with pace. Wood is back

42.1 Wood to Brathwaite, DOT, length ball, Brathwaite defends down the ground

42.5 Wood to Brathwaite, 1 run, well directed short ball, Brathwaite fends it towards short third man

42.6 Wood to Thomas, DOT.

41.4 Archer to Thomas, DOT, bumper again and Thomas sways away from it. The close in fielders shouted very loudly, but there was no edge there, no spike on ultra edge and they lose the DRS

41.5 Archer to Thomas, DOT, full ball, defends to mid wicket

41.6 Archer to Thomas, DOT.

Cottrell walks in at 9

39.5 Archer to Cottrell, OUT, two in two! Archer bowls length on leg stump, Cottrell plays across the line, is struck on the pads, goes for the DRS, but it was pretty pointless. Off he goes and Archer is on a hattrick now!

Cottrell lbw b Archer 0(1)

Oshane Thomas to face the hattrick ball. Can he survive?

39.6 Archer to Thomas, DOT, he does! Full it is and he defends

39.1 Archer to Pooran, DOT, driven straight down the ground, but mistimed it. Goes to mid off

39.2 Archer to Pooran, 1 leg byes, off his pad towards fine leg

39.3 Archer to Brathwaite, 1 run, tucked towards mid wicket

Some issue for captain Morgan here.Root beckons for the physio and England will hope it is not another injury today. They already have lost Roy and the skipper walks off! Buttler will take over the reigns I'm guessing. Yes, it is Buttler the captain now

39.4 Archer to Pooran, OUT, Archer appeals loudly and Buttler goes for the DRS in his WC captaincy debut first ball! Fair delivery, it seems to breeze past the glove, oh there is a slight spike on it and Pooran walks off! Archer gets the wicket they needed

Pooran c Buttler b Archer 63(78)

Carlos Brathwaite is the new man in and he does love England (cue 2016 T20 WC final). Archer is back.

37.2 Archer to Pooran, DOT, driven well, but short cover stops it well

37.3 Archer to Pooran, 2 runs, drives the half volley wide of cover and comes back easily

37.4 Archer to Pooran, DOT, defends on the front foot

37.5 Archer to Pooran, DOT, bumper and Pooran just about ducks under it

37.6 Archer to Pooran, DOT.

Wood is back.

36.1 Wood to Russell, FOUR, short and he pulls it past mid wicket for four

36.2 Wood to Russell, OUT, gone this time! Short again, Dre Russ pulled it awkwardly, and the boundaries are big too, Woakes in the deep took it comfortably. He will breathe a sigh of relief after that drop did not prove so costly!

Russell c Woakes b Wood 21(16)

Good innings!

Some issue with Russell's wrist after those two biggies, and the physio straps something on it. Russell was in pain as soon as he hit the last ball

35.1 Root to Pooran, DOT, mistimes the sweep to short fine leg

35.6 Root to Pooran, DOT.

34.1 Rashid to Russell, 1run, dropped in the deep! Russell looks to go big, it goes very high in the air, swirls towards deep mid wicket, Woakes ran in and shelled it. This could be very costly because it's Dre Russ!

34.2 Rashid to Pooran, 1 run.

34.3 Rashid to Russell, DOT.

34.4 Rashid to Russell, SIX, makes them pay! Thrown up full, he powers this straight down the ground. Smoked it really

34.5 Rashid to Russell, DOT.

34.6 Rashid to Russell, SIX, full again, gets under it again and this time sends it over the long on fence. Oh Woakes, what have you done here?

33.4 Root to Russell, 1 run, played to short fine leg

33.5 Root to Pooran, DOT, played to cover

33.6 Root to Pooran, DOT.

They also took drinks with that wicket. And guess what, England have promoted Chris Woakes up to no.3. Pinch hitter experiment? Let's see if it comes off

15.1 Holder to Root, DOT, Gayle dives at cover point and the crowd go wild with some cheers for that from the big man

28.5 Rashid to Hetmyer, DOT, played to cover

28.6 Rashid to Hetmyer, DOT.

Surprise here as Joe Root comes into the attack. Off spinner to two lefties

Team News

England XI:Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Jos Buttler(wk), Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Eng win toss; to bowl first

Holder calls it wrong and England want to bowl first. The continous rain will mean some moisture in the pitch and Morgan wants to take advantage of that, as expected. No changes for England.

Holder would've gone for a bowl first too, but relishes the chance to put runs on the board first finally. Lewis and Russell are back in the team while Shannon Gabriel will finally make his first appearance in the World Cup.

West Indies look to replicate early season form vs England

West Indies have become unpredictable over the years in all formats of the game. Their players are mostly T20 specialists, playing in leagues around the world, becoming superstars in their own right. This team seems to be a hotch-potch of those individuals, but they have clicked together well so far. They annihilated Pakistan before giving going down fighting against Australia. They also had South Africa under the pump, but the latter were saved by the rain gods. So England will most certainly not take the Windies lightly, especially considering their performances earlier this year.

England, on the other hand, looked to be back to their best against Bangladesh after being handed a shock defeat by Pakistan. Roy, Bairstow and Buttler look to be in prime form, though the latter had a slight discomfort with his leg. Mark Wood is their other injury concern, but they have made a ready-made replacement in Tom Curran. England seem a settled squad and gel well as a unit, so they'll only be looking to consolidate their favourites tag against a formidable Windies side.
