ICC World Cup India vs Pakistan Highlights: India trample Pakistan by 89 runsThe result was a foregone conclusion after yet another batting collapse from Pakistan

Familiar territory for Pakistan

India vs Pakistan was a keenly anticipated game, especially after the Champions Trophy final of 2017. But it turned out to be a damp squib in the end as Pakistan engineered an all too familiar batting collapse in the middle phase, losing four wickets for 12 runs in 20 balls to effectively kiss their chances goodbye. The win was set up by the Indian batsmen and bowlers in equal proportions.

Rohit Sharma starred with the bat, scoring 140. He looked very fluent in the middle and looked set for a maiden WC double hundred but played a horrendous shot to get out. Kohli and KL Rahul helped themselves to fifties and the middle order strung together a few runs to take India to a massive 336. Pakistan started watchfully before Bhuvi had to walk off with an apparent hamstring injury, one which India hopes is not too serious.

Vijay Shankar came on to finish his over, and trapped Imam-ul-Haq in front with his first ball. Fakhar and Azam then stitched a 100-run plus partnership, the only time Pakistan looked like they were in the game. However, Kuldeep bowled a beauty to get rid of Azam, and from then on it was a story of brainfades from the Pakistani batsmen.

Other than Pakistan, the English weather also disappointed, interrupting the game with two rain delays and playing cat and mouse, with covers being put on and taken off constantly. It has been a very long day, a satisfying one for Indian fans, not so much for the Pakistanis, who really have to pull something out of the hat if they want to make the semi-finals.

It has been a pleasure to get you the live updates, do join us tomorrow as West Indies take on Bangladesh. Till then, take care and goodnight, you'll certainly need it after today!

So it will the last over of a loooooooong day. Pandya to bowl.

39.1 Pandya to Imad, DOT, shuffles across to scoop, misses it and walks out of the pitch too, was so much off balance

39.5 Pandya to Shadab, 1 run, to point

Last ball, nothing to see here now

39.6 Pandya to Imad, DOT, looks to scoop and misses again. Ends the over as he started it

37.2 Chahal to Imad, 2 runs, hit wide of long on, shouted "do, do, do!" as he hit it

37.3 Chahal to Imad, 1 run, mistimes the slog to mid wicket

37.4 Chahal to Shadab, 2 runs, slog swept to deep mid wicket, KL drops it there, was way too casual and maybe just doesn't want another Pakistani batsman to walk out to the middle there

37.5 Chahal to Shadab, 2 runs, chipped over cover for two

37.6 Chahal to Shadab, 2 runs.

36.1 Bumrah to Shadab, 2 runs, full on middle, gets it to wide long on, couple taken

36.2 Bumrah to Shadab, 1 run, looks to slog, mistimes it to long on

Fail to understand why not just bowl Kedar Jadhav and Chahal to finish things off quickly here. There was no need for the pacers at all

36.3 Bumrah to Imad, DOT, slower full ball, Imad turns it to square leg

36.4 Bumrah to Imad, 2 runs, slashed away over backward point, too slow of an outfield for a boundary, two taken

36.5 Bumrah to Imad, 1 run, length on leg stump, Imad makes him room and gets it to sweeper cover

Shadab Khan is the new man in. Oh also we are into the final powerplay because of the revised number of overs

36.1 Chahal to Shadab, 1 run, full on off, driven with an angled bat to long off, mix-up there but they don't run for the second

36.2 Chahal to Imad, WIDE, Chahal wants to bowl more than 5 overs for some reason

36.5 Chahal to Imad, 1 run, looks to drive, gets it off the inside half to long on

36.6 Chahal to Shadab, 1 run.

In case you forgot, Sarfaraz Ahmed got out before the rain break, seems like ages ago now. Wasn't the result foregone then? Hang with us for five more overs, the way the Pakistanis were falling before the break, I don't think they'll last even that long. Back we go for the action

Revised target for Pakistan

Pakistan's revised target is 302 in 40 overs, so they now need 136 in 5 overs. Have we seen something more pointless in World Cups? I don't think so.

Official update

Words from the Cricket World Cup's official website-

"The rain has subsided, and play will resume at 7:10pm (23:40 IST)"

So the covers are coming off slowly now. Seems to have stopped raining, but it is still cloudy so maybe it still may come down later

Update but no update

So the live visuals show that the rain is pouring down now. The pitch and square are completely covered, the umpires are out there with umbrellas for some reason, does not seem like an inspection to me. Stands have cleared out a bit, and we have already started losing overs now. May not be too long if this match is declared, it is quite obvious now.

Pakistan are 86 runs behind, are six wickets down with only Imad Wasim remaining as the last recognized batsman.

No one is!

The covers are back!

So Chahal was ready to bowl but Erasmus has asked for the covers to come on. Maybe a slight drizzle, not much that we can see on the live visuals. India will not mind this, Pakistan are 86 runs behind on the DLS par score.

So currently, it is a comfortable victory for India

34.1 Shankar to Sarfaraz, OUT, self-implode. The word is so apt for Pakistan, it is unbelievable. This one is on a length, Sarfaraz looks to play I don't know what, maybe a punch or drive, it takes his inside edge and disturbs the stumps. The bails falls off again, now that is a miracle!

Sarfaraz b Shankar 12(30)

33.1 Bumrah to Imad, DOT, driven back to Bumrah without any feet

33.2 Bumrah to Imad, FOUR, powered down the ground! It was short, Imad backed away and hit it dead straight, the umpire had to move quickly to avoid being hit

33.3 Bumrah to Imad, 1 run, slower delivery on a length, turned away to mid wicket

33.4 Bumrah to Sarfaraz, 1 leg byes, full toss on leg, it took his pad to short fine

Pakistan are 66 runs behind on the DLS method. It is starting to get a bit dark there

33.5 Bumrah to Imad, 1 run, to mid on

33.6 Bumrah to Sarfaraz, 1 run.

Vijay Shankar is back

32.1 Shankar to Sarfaraz, DOT, wide outside off, cut to Jadeja at backward point

32.2 Shankar to Sarfaraz, DOT, driven straight back to Vijay, who threatens a throw

32.3 Shankar to Sarfaraz, DOT, driven to short cover, where Virat does an animated turn. He is enjoying himself out there

32.4 Shankar to Sarfaraz, WIDE, down leg

32.4 Shankar to Sarfaraz, DOT, yorker outside off, dug out well, and Jadeja flies at backward point to stop it. You cannot steal a run with him there

32.5 Shankar to Sarfaraz, 1 run, driven down to long on with a straight bat

32.6 Shankar to Imad, 1 run.

Have they thrown it away?

Bumrah is back, presumably to finish things off quickly

31.1 Bumrah to Imad, 1 run, too straight, easy for Imad to tuck it to square leg

31.2 Bumrah to Sarfaraz, 1 run, nudged to mid wicket, ran the first hard, wanted the two, stops on seeing the fielder was Jadeja

31.3 Bumrah to Imad, DOT, length outside off, played with an angled bat to point

31.4 Bumrah to Imad, 1 run, confusion somewhat. Imad played it to mid on, Hardik sends a needless throw, they run off the overthrows

31.5 Bumrah to Sarfaraz, 1 run, short, he rides the bounce and runs it to third man

31.6 Bumrah to Imad, FOUR, short and pulled away very well to the deep mid wicket fence. Imad Wasim is not afraid to take him on

And that will be drinks, God do Pakistan need it!

30.1 Pandya to Sarfaraz, 1 run, to mid wicket

30.2 Pandya to Imad, 1 run, slashed away to deep point

30.3 Pandya to Sarfaraz, 1 run, goes short, Sarfaraz turns this to square leg

30.4 Pandya to Imad, 1 run, slow short ball, turned to deep square leg

30.5 Pandya to Sarfaraz, 1 run, soft touch to cover and calls Imad through

30.6 Pandya to Imad, 1 run.

29.3 Kuldeep to Imad, 1 run, cut to deep point

29.4 Kuldeep to Sarfaraz, DOT, punched off the back foot to Kuldeep

29.5 Kuldeep to Sarfaraz, DOT, prods forward to defend

29.6 Kuldeep to Sarfaraz, 1 run.

Imad Wasim is the new man in but Sarfaraz will be the one to face the hat-trick ball

28.1 Pandya to Sarfaraz, DOT, he survives! On a length again, Sarfaraz defends down the pitch with a straight bat

28.2 Pandya to Sarfaraz, DOT, walks down the track, Hardik drops it short, takes it on the glove, luckily did not lob up

28.3 Pandya to Sarfaraz, DOT, goes fuller, the skipper flicks it to mid wicket, along the ground though

28.4 Pandya to Sarfaraz, 1 run, on his body this time, turned to mid wicket

28.5 Pandya to Imad, DOT, driven back to Hardik

28.6 Pandya to Imad, FOUR, short and pulled away well to the deep square leg boundary

Shoaib Malik is the new man in

26.6 Pandya to Malik, OUT, what the hell is happening there? Malik walks now. Hardik bowled it on a length, Malik looks to play at it for no reason whatsoever, it takes the inside edge and disturbs the stumps. The bails fall off for once! Hardik on a hat-trick now!

Malik b Pandya 0(1)

Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed walks in to the middle. The other new batsman is is Mohammad Hafeez, who walked in at the fall of Azam's wicket. Sorry we missed that earlier.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is back.

26.1 Pandya to Hafeez, 2 runs, drives the half volley past covers, comes back for two

26.2 Pandya to Hafeez, DOT, driven down the ground to mid off

Commentators are suggesting the light does not look good and Pakistan are 41 runs behind the DLS par score right now

26.3 Pandya to Hafeez, DOT, climbs up to Hafeez, who hops up to defend to the off side

26.4 Pandya to Hafeez, WIDE, slower ball, wrong line, goes down leg

26.4 Pandya to Hafeez, DOT, defends this back of a length delivery to point

26.5 Pandya to Hafeez, OUT, and another! Horrible dismissal this from one of the most experienced Pakistani batsman. It was a loosener on the pads, he flicked it aerially, straight into the hands of deep square leg. Pakistan are sinking now!

Hafeez c Shankar b Pandya 9(7)

By the way, Virat is back on the field. Maybe he only needed a bathroom break, as Manjrekar suggested on air

25.1 Kuldeep to Fakhar, DOT, beats the outside edge!

25.2 Kuldeep to Fakhar, OUT, another one! One brings two and this is the perfect example of that. Kuldeep bowls this flatter again, goes full, Fakhar goes for thw sweep, it ballons up off the top edge, and short fine takes it easily

Fakhar c Chahal b Kuldeep 62(75)

Virat is off the field, Rohit Sharma has taken over the captaincy

23.4 Kuldeep to Azam, 1 run, quick single taken after turning it towards short fine

23.5 Kuldeep to Fakhar, 1 run, played to deep point

23.6 Kuldeep to Azam, OUT, knocked him over! This is a beauty! Kuldeep did not give it much flight, landed it on a length on off stump, it spun into him and goes through the gap between bat and pad. Excellent delivery, needed some magic to break this partnership and he has provided exactly what the doctor ordered

Azam b Kuldeep 48(57)

22.1 Chahal to Fakhar, 1 run, makes room and drives to mid off

22.2 Chahal to Azam, SIX, great shot! Full and he slog sweeps this powerfully over the deep mid wicket stands

22.4 Chahal to Fakhar, 1 run, swept very fine to backward square leg

17.6 Kuldeep to Azam, 1 run.

1.5 Bumrah to Fakhar, DOT, another one across Zaman, who shoulders arms sensibly

1.6 Bumrah to Fakhar, DOT.

Ok, so we are back!

Imam and Fakhar walk out to the middle. These two have not had a good partnership other than in the game against England, and Pakistan will desperately hope the duo click in tandem today. They'll need them to step up if they want to chase this down. Bhuvi it will be with the new ball and he has been in good form this WC. Here we go!

0.1 Bhuvneshwar to Imam, 1 run, length on leg stump, glanced to fine leg

0.2 Bhuvneshwar to Fakhar, DOT, more like it, straighter length ball, he shoulders arms

0.5 Bhuvneshwar to Imam, DOT, length on off, defended to the off side

0.6 Bhuvneshwar to Imam, DOT, ooh movement off the pitch, it beats Imam's edge!

The horror continues!

Just as we were about to start, the drizzle returns again. This is frustrating because the sun is out again, and it is simultaneously drizzling too. The main pitch is covered and the players walk back to the dugout

So reports state that we are going to have a restart in under 10 minutes, there is no rain/drizzle so the umpires have decided to go on and play

Looks like we will not have a restart on time here. Groundsmen indicate towards the dark clouds towards square leg/deep mid wicket as reason for not removing the covers just yet. Some rope is being used to remove water off the outfield

Umpires walk out to inspect

Marais Erasmus and Bruce Oxenford stride out to talk to the groundsmen. There is no drizzle as of now, but there has to be an inspection nevertheless.

Bad news!

Looks like the rain is back as live visuals show that the main pitch has been covered to protect against the drizzle. It is swinging back and forth now, as the sun shines down 3 minutes after the pitch is covered!

It is going to be a tough ask for Pakistan!

Final over, here we go!

Here is the official update!

Another update from our reporter!

It has stopped raining now and it lasted just about 23 minutes and that's some weather prediction! The covers are coming off and third umpire Paul Reiffel is on the ground inspecting the outfield. The super soppers have done their bit. If there isn’t a much delay in resumption, India may just get to finish their 50 overs.

Good news!

Live broadcast show that the groundsmen are taking the covers off as it has stopped raining! If it does not rain soon, we'll still have a 50-over game!

Everyone right now!

Slight update from our reporter on the ground!

The rain has stopped play and it’s expected to last 23 minutes, according to forecast. India are 305/3 from 46.5 overs at this moment and if they don’t get to bat again, Pakistan will have to chase 327 in 46 overs. That’s as good as chasing just over 350 from 50 overs!

Our reporter on ground has some observations for you

After Rahul’s departure for a well-made fifty, Rohit and Kohli have managed to build on the excellent start. Rohit has brought up his second century and his third fifty-plus score of the tournament, and is looking good for a daddy hundred. Kohli has looked assured from ball one while Pakistan bowling has been flat on a flatter wicket. At this rate, India may just end up posting another 350 score and that can be a daunting target for Pakistan to chase even in the good batting conditions. Already, Pakistan spinners are getting some turn. India 205/1 in 35 overs.

Sarfaraz has been a very aware captain today. He knows which fielder is placed where and shouts their name to field when the ball goes towards them

Some observations from our reporter on the ground!

India have grown from strength to strength and Pakistan have looked deflated at the moment. Their bowlers appear clueless and captain seems to have run out of his options. He has pressed three seamers and four spinners into action without any success. While Rohit is looking ominous, Rahul has quietly grown in confidence, slamming Malik and Hafeez for magnificent sixes in quick succession. He also brought up his 50 in style with a first six. They are opening for the first time, but it showed in their confused running between the wickets. But they have managed to strike some understanding, calls are quick and louder. Meanwhile, Wahab Riaz has received first warning for running on the danger area on follow through. Pakistan in chaos.

1.3 Hassan to Rohit, FOUR, streaky! Those are the first runs on the board too. Came back in that one, beats Rohit, takes his inside edge and runs away to the fine leg fence

1.4 Hassan to Rohit, DOT, much more confident. A back of a length delivery, he defends off the back foot

1.5 Hassan to Rohit, 2 runs, good-looking shot that. Coming in again, Rohit flicks it wristily towards deep square leg for a couple

1.6 Hassan to Rohit, 3 runs, another flick, this time he hops up, plays it past mid wicket, they come back for three

So KL Rahul walks out to the middle with Rohit Sharma. There will be no left-right combo to unsettle the opposition bowlers but both Rahul and Rohit are more than capable and classy players who can give a rousing start for India. They'll be facing Mohammad Amir, who has been in excellent form in the WC so far. KL to take strike, with two slips for the edge

0.1 Amir to Rahul, DOT, length ball outside off, KL defends towards point

0.2 Amir to Rahul, DOT, almost a replay of the previous delivery, KL prods forward to defend this time

0.3 Amir to Rahul, DOT, fuller, coming back into the batsman, KL drives to mid on

0.4 Amir to Rahul, DOT, angled across KL, pitched on off and moving away, he shoulders arms

0.5 Amir to Rahul, DOT, another length ball outside off, no swing whatsoever, KL lets it go again

0.6 Amir to Rahul, DOT, maiden to start off!

All set!

Time for the national anthems!

Pakistan's anthem is played first, followed by that of India

Team News

Pakistan win toss; to bowl first

Sarfaraz calls it right and he'll bowl first. It is cloudy, he reasons. Shadab Khan is back for Pakistan.

Kohli would've wanted to bowl first as well, he says. Vijay Shankar in for Shikhar Dhawan for India

In full flow!

A rivalry like no other

India vs Pakistan will undoubtedly be the crowd puller match in most tournaments and there is none bigger than the men's World Cup. The two sides have a lot of past history, though Pakistan have quite an embarrassing record against their neighbours in World Cups. They have not won a single game in 27 years, and will look to change that today. They come off the back of a humiliating loss to Australia, where their batting collapsed spectacularly, but as we know, they are capable of turning up on their day.

India on the other hand comes off the back of two thumping victories against South Africa and Australia, so they'll be full of confidence coming into the clash. The only minus point is that the highly successful opening combo of Dhawan and Rohit will be disturbed as the former is out because of a thumb injury sustained in the last game. It will be interesting to see who gets a run at no.4, considering KL Rahul will be promoted to open the innings.
