India on Wednesday came out in support of Iran after the Donald Trump administration announced it would withdraw from the landmark nuclear deal with Tehran, authored by the previous US President Barak Obama.
“India has always maintained that the Iranian nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy by respecting Iran’s right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, reacting to the development.
Indian foreign office has also asked the USA to respect “international community’s strong interest in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme”.
All parties should engage constructively to address and resolve issues that have arisen with respect to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), it added.
The JCPOA is the agreement that Iran entered into with five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — the USA, UK, Russia, China and France — and Germany after years of negotiation.
It was considered a signature piece of foreign policy achievement by the Obama administration.
Trump's announcement on Tuesday shocked the world with most of the world leaders expressing their concerns about the US move.
