A 13-year-old boy was kidnapped and murdered in north-east Delhi’s Rohtas Nagar by a 28-year-old man and a juvenile.

The boy was kidnapped on Thursday and murdered after the accused demanded Rs 30 lakh ransom from his family, police said on Saturday.

Two locals, including a 17-year-old juvenile, from Rohtas Nagar are allegedly involved in the incident. The juvenile and the victim were acquainted with each other. Their fathers also knew each other. Police have apprehended the juvenile and the other accused, Mohit Chaudhry.

On February 19, Chandrashekhar Sharma had approached police claiming that his son Jatin was missing from his home. Chandrashekhar stays in East Rohtas Nagar.

While searching for the boy, police questioned Jatin’s schoolmates. Jatin studied in class 8 at Dev Public School near his house. One of his classmates said he had seen Jatin with the juvenile who stays nearby.

Chandrashekhar soon received an SMS, which read that Jatin was kidnapped and a ransom of Rs 30 lakh was demanded by the sender. No name was written in the SMS.

Police found that the sender’s phone number was taken on a fake ID in Geeta Colony in east Delhi and the address was wrong. Police traced the number and learnt that the SMS was sent from Shahdara.

Police questioned some people around 9 pm on Friday and learnt that Mohit and a juvenile are involved in the kidnapping and murder. Police detained them for questioning.

They allegedly disclosed to police that they committed the crime for money. They had kidnapped Jatin around 7 pm on Thursday and taken him to Rathi Mill. Within 15 minutes, they strangled him.

A case under section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code was filed following the child’s kidnapping. Police have now added IPC sections 364 A (kidnapping for ransom) and 302 (murder).
