Leonardo DiCaprio went all out to get into his 1820s fur trapper character for "The Revenant" and decided to eat bison liver.

The 41-year-old "Wolf of Wall Street" star opened up about the brutal conditions the cast and crew have to survive in while shooting, reported People magazine.

"The bad part is the membrane around it. It's like a balloon. When you bite into it, it bursts in your mouth," DiCaprio said.

The actor said the guidance of director Alejandro G Inarritu Birdman led to a better performance and a better film.

"There's been a lot said about the movie and the difficulties making it, and how meticulous Alejandro is with his vision. But to me, that should be praised.

"I don't want to work with somebody who isn't thinking of every possible aspect of what's up on the screen. I think there's a hunger for audiences to see something completely extreme and difficult," he said. "The Revenant" will release on Christmas Day.
