The Delhi Metro has started installing platform screen doors at the underground stations for the safety of commuters, a move meant to help arrest the rising number of suicides on its network.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has set up platform edge doors at Chawri Bazar station, one of the few shortlisted underground stations to get the facility on the Yellow Line – Huda City Centre to Samaypur Badli.
Other stations which will soon get the platform screen doors are Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Kashmere Gate, New Delhi and Chandni Chowk.
At present, the Airport Express Line already has platform edge doors at all its stations.
The platform screen doors (PSDs) at Chawri Bazar are over 1.7 metre high and have display panels, which will be used for advertisements, said an official with the DMRC.
“At the moment, PSDs have been put up on platform no. 1 shuttling passengers from Huda City Centre/Samaypur Badli towards Rajiv Chowk,” said the official.
According to the DMRC, some of the busiest interchange stations as well as the ones which see the highest number of footfall have been shortlisted to get the facility.
The Delhi Metro is also planning to install platform screen doors on the Blue Line, Dwarka to Noida City Centre/Vaishali.
Under the Metro’s phase 3 project, platform edge doors will be installed at all the stations of its upcoming corridors, Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar and Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden.
The Metro network expands over 190 km across the city shuttling over 26 lakh passengers every day. The Delhi Metro saw around one lakh footfall above average every day during the city government’s odd-even car curb scheme between January 1 and 15.
