Dance Jatre
The annual Dance Jathre of the Shambhavi School of Dance on Saturday and Sunday was colourful with workshops, competitions, stalls and exhibition apart from performances.
The Dance Jatre (Dance Fair) began with a colourful Desi Nritya (folk dance) under the direction of Prabhakar. Four young and talented male dancers of Bengaluru under the banner of Tandava presented two items in Bharatanatya.
Mallari, the customary opening piece was followed by a Ganesha Stuthi “Sri Gananatham” in the raga Kanakangi.
The well-knit varna (Dr M Balamuralikrishna – raga Gambheeranata) on Shakthi Devatha was attractive with beautiful swara and jathi. Srinivasan Rajendran, Somashekhar, Anantha Nagaraj and Karteek Dathar gave a energetic performance.
Vyjayanthi Kashi, senior dancer gave a Kuchipudi dance recital, along with her five students. It was the story of Kanyakumari and Baanasura Vadhe. With her bright abhinaya and quick movements the episode was narrated beautifully. They concluded with a thillana neatly.
Bright Kathak
Shama Bhate is a senior Kathak dancer and a reputed teacher. The “Shiva Vandana” gave six students of Shama Bhate, a good start.
In the “Kaaliya Mardhan,” young Krishna playing the ball on the banks of river Jamuna and killing the serpent was well performed. “Chakkar Ke Tukude’ was proof of their precise footwork and concluded with the Bhajan “Baajere Muruliya”. Young dancers performed with assurance and practiced ease.
Pleasing vocal
Bangalore Lalithakala Parishat presented “Lalitha Sangeetha” by Veena Vasudev. Veena, being daughter of Vidwan (Late) V V Rao, belongs to a great musicians’ family and she is well versed in both vocal and veena. She is giving concerts from her tender age and has performed in many parts of the country and is a recipient of several awards and honours.
Veena presented classical devotionals, devaranama, Vachana and Bhavageethe which brought variety and pleased the gathering.
Annamacharya’s compositions, in which she is specialised, was the special attraction of her concert. ‘Podagantimayya’ in the Mohana raga, ‘Nelamudu Shobhanalu’ in Madhyamavathi and ‘Kondalalo Nelakonna’ (Hindola) caught the attention of the listeners easily, while ‘Sriman Narayana’ is a well-known kruthi of the Saint. Popular Kannada lyrics like “Yede Thumbi Hadidenu” (Dr G S Shivarudrappa), “Deepavu Ninnadu” (Dr K S Narasimha Swamy) and “Elli Jaritho” (Dr N S Lakshminarayana Bhatta) – are ever popular songs.
“Ba Ba Bhakuthara Hrudaya Mandira’ is a infrequent devaranama of Vijayadasaru and “Thanu Karagadavaralli” is a familiar vachana of Akkamahadevi. With her high-pitched melodious voice and good presentation Veena Vasudev carried the appreciation of the connoisseurs.
She was well supported by Jnana Murthy on keyboard, Jayachandra on thabala and Selva Kumar on rhythm pad.
