Depressed over his medical condition, he kills family members

Depressed over his medical condition, a 31-year-old physically challenged man killed his wife and five-year-old son after celebrating his sixth wedding anniversary at their rented house in Rohini on Friday, police said.

Nitin Maini, paralysed down the chest after being hit by a military truck three years ago, said he strangled his wife Shweta, 24, with a dupatta and smothered his son Garv in his room. They live at Pocket 11, Sector 22, Rohini. Nitin also tried to kill himself as there were multiple stab wounds on his belly.

“He rang the police control room at 2 am on Friday. He said he had killed his wife and son, and was locked inside his room. He also rang his in-laws and informed them about the incident,” said B S Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer Delhi).

When police reached the spot, they broke open the door of Nitin’s room and found Shweta and Garv dead on the bed, with Nitin sitting next to them.

“We have recovered the scissor he used to stab himself and the dupatta used to strangle his wife,” Jaiswal said.

Nitin’s mother, Sushma, and younger brothers Rohit and Shivam, who were sleeping in adjacent rooms, were unaware of the incident.

“They died under mysterious circumstances as no one heard a sound coming from Nitin’s room. We have arrested him over his statement,” Jaiswal added.

Jaiswal said Nitin suspected that his wife may have been having an extra-marital affair.

Shweta and Garv’s bodies have been sent for post-mortem at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri.

“The exact reason why the mother and son were killed can only be ascertained through the post-mortem report. A crime and a forensic team have also visited the spot and taken samples and fingerprints,” Jaiswal said.

A case has been filed against Nitin under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code with Begumpur police station.

Nitin had been working as an interior designer with a private company before he met with the accident. Shweta had been working with a non-government organisation in Laxmi Nagar for the last four months, while Garv was a lower KG student at G D Goenka Public School in Rohini.
