Few hours after a youth returned home from a 12-day trip to Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir, he was stabbed to death by five pickpockets near Sadar Bazar police station in north Delhi over sharing of some money. The victim was also alleged to be a pickpocket.
Deepak, 21, a resident of Basti Julhan in Sadar Bazar, was at a local market with his friend Lakhan, 17, when he was attacked around 10:30 pm on Friday.
The attackers have been identified as Gautam, 18, Ranglal, 21, and three juveniles, who lived in the same locality.
“The accused, who knew Deepak, have been arrested. Deepak was allegedly attacked with a knife over some money obtained through pickpocketing. Lakhan was also injured as he was hit with a brick,” a police official said.
Family’s say
Deepak’s brother Anil said they tried to take the 17-year-old in an autorickshaw to Sucheta Kriplani Hospital.
“He, however, passed away when we reached near Ramakrishna Ashram Marg Metro station,” he said.
Deepak was later declared brought dead at the hospital. His body is currently preserved at Lady Hardinge Medical College.
“We will hand over the body to his family after post-mortem on Sunday,” the official said.
A case has been registered against the five accused at Sadar Bazar police station.
They face charges of murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention under sections 302, 308 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
During initial investigation, police through the help of technical surveillance had traced them to Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh.
“A team was later dispatched to Uttar Pradesh and the accused were held on Saturday evening,” the official said.
Deepak is survived by two brothers, Anil and Subhash, and two sisters, Jyoti and Radha.
Anil also said Deepak had returned home around 3 am on Friday after a 12-day trip to Vaishno Devi temple.
His family also alleged Ranglal and Devender have criminal records.
