Faced with a volley of criticism, the outgoing Prime Minister’s Office team said on Wednesday that the social media account @PMOIndia has been “secured” by Twitter and will be handed over to the Narendra Modi administration “along with its followers” numbering around 1.24 million.

A controversy erupted on Tuesday after Manmohan Singh’s office closed down the PMO Twitter account ahead of Modi taking over as the Prime Minister and renamed it as @PMOIndiaArchive, evoking sharp reaction from the BJP, which alleged that the former appropriated government digital assets as well as its followers.

In a statement, the PMO said, “The Twitter account @PMOIndia has been secured by Twitter and they are assisting in the handover of the same to this office to be available to the incoming PMO administration along with its followers.”
