A disgruntled former railway employee critically injured a lower divisional clerk with a sharp edged weapon outside Railway Bhawan in New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The assailant has been identified as Dinesh Murmu, 50, who hails from Bihar’s Munger district. He is said to be mentally unstable.

“Dinesh attacked Bhagwan Singh with a sharp edged weapon at around 2 pm. After the incident, the accused had tried to flee from the spot, but was caught by Bhagwan’s colleagues,” said Anil Kumar, Station house officer of Parliament Street police station.

Bhagwan was immediately rushed to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

He is employed as lower divisional clerk in issue and dispatch section of Railway Bhawan. During the lunch hour, he was sitting on the ground outside Railway Bhawan, when Dinesh attacked him.

‘Dismissed from service’

Dinesh, a gangman at Gorakhpur railway station, was dismissed a few years ago for remaining absent from the duty.

“He had been visiting

Railway Bhawan to protest against his dismissal. It is not clear why he chose to single out Bhagwan,” another official added.

A case has been registered against Dinesh with Parliament Street police station in central Delhi.
