Their dream to start a life together away from their families landed them in jail.
Vikas and his girlfriend thought of beginning an "independent" life but when they couldn't find the means to support it, they chose a shortcut- stealing jewellery.

Police said the two allegedly stole gold jewellery belonging to Vikas's mother.
"They said they did it to start a life separately (from their family) by selling off the gold jewellery," said Pankaj Kumar Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Outer).

He said Vikas's mother, Meena, filed a complaint on March 2 in this regard.
"Based on a tip-off, Vikas and his girlfriend were caught at Mahipalpur near Indira Gandhi International Airport on March 3," the ADC (Outer) said.

The officer said that Vikas and his girlfriend "confessed" to the alleged theft during interrogation.

Six chains, four necklace, two bangles, four earrings and two rings have been recovered, police said.
