Six police officers had a close shave when a drunk taxi driver rammed his vehicle into a police barricade at Barakhamba Road during the wee hours of Thursday. Two police control room vans were damaged.

Sher Singh, who hails from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district and works at a taxi stand in south-east Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin, has been arrested.

“The incident took place when two PCR vans were deployed at a barricade for vehicle checking near New Delhi House at Barakhamba Road,” a police officer said.
Around 3.50 am, a speeding taxi was found approaching the barricade from Mandi House side.

“Instead of slowing down, the driver rammed into the barricade,” the officer added.
On impact, the barricade hit the bonnet of PCR V-77, while the taxi went on to hit PCR V-78.

“However, no police personnel was injured,” the officer said.

Head constable Radha Kishan, and constables Ram Gopal and Atmaram were deployed with PCR V-77, while sub-inspector Khem Singh, and constables Sushil Kumar and Sohan Lal were with PCR V-78.

A case under Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act has been lodged against Sher with Barakhamba Road police station. A medical examination at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital confirmed that Sher was in an inebriated condition.
