A waiter kidnapped his former colleague’s four-year-old son for a ransom of Rs 60,000 from north Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar on Tuesday.

He was, however, nabbed within hours of the abduction and the boy safely recovered, police said.

The 21-year-old kidnapper, Mohit, was trying to flee with the boy in a train from Old Delhi railway station when he was nabbed. Police said he was traced by his mobile phone location within 90 minutes of the complaint being registered.

The boy’s father, Santosh Kumar, had discovered on Tuesday evening that his son had gone missing. A search with the help of neighbours was launched in the locality before he approached police at 10.40 pm.

A phone call from the abductor demanding a ransom of Rs 60,000 had prompted him to seek police help. A case was registered with Adarsh Nagar police station and the abductor’s mobile phone number put on surveillance.

His location was shown to be in the area of Old Delhi railway station. A police team, accompanied by Santosh, then rushed to the station.

The police team began combing the platforms of the railway station. Any suspicious man accompanied by a child matching the description was stopped and their identities confirmed before being allowed to leave.

The abductor was finally traced on platform number 10. The man was trying to board a train to leave the city when police team caught him. Once Santosh identified the boy in his arms as his son, the abductor was arrested. The boy was found unharmed.

Santosh identified the abductor as Mohit who worked with him at a restaurant in the past.
