A 24-year-old married woman allegedly hanged herself at her home in north-west Delhi’s Subhash Place on Saturday night. While no suicide note was recovered from her, her family members have accused her in-laws for abetting the suicide by demanding dowry.

The body was allegedly discovered by her in-laws when they discovered no response from her despite calling her for dinner several times. When they went to her room upstairs, they found her hanging from the fan using a dupatta.

They claimed to have informed police immediately after which the body was brought down and sent for post-mortem.

The victim Sanjana’s parents were informed and they arrived at the Subhash Place police station and alleged that she was being mentally harassed by her husband’s family for dowry ever since her marriage to a local businessman Sanjeev in 2009. The couple also has a four-year-old daughter.

Police said they are questioning the two families after they registered an FIR. Arrests would be made if it is found that she was indeed being harassed.
