Britannia Industries on Tuesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art 55,000 sq feet research and development centre at Bidadi, near here.

The company has invested Rs 200 crore in its first-owned manufacturing facility in the state, which will focus on fostering innovations and launch of disruptive products for Indian and global consumers.

The centre houses analytical, sensory, and microbiology labs, in addition to pilot plants for its core product portfolio, which includes biscuits, cakes, rusk, breads and dairy, the company said.

“We aim to be a ‘Total Foods’ Company in five years from now, serving over a billion Indians four times a day,” Britannia Industries Managing Director Varun Berry told reporters.

He said the new R&D centre will act as a springboard to accelerate product innovations in newer categories and will help the company in its growth into adjacent bakery segments within macro-snacking.

The manufacturing facility in Bidadi, built adjacent to the R&D centre, is also equipped with high-speed processing machinery.

Currently, the facility employs more than an 800-strong workforce and will expand up to 1,350 people when it reaches 100% capacity, the statement said. The company, which had a revenue of Rs 7,947.90 crore in FY2015-16, is aiming to double it in next four to five years on back of continued growth in current business and new categories in which it is planning to enter.

Britannia is currently undertaking manufacturing activities in India and the Middle East. It is putting up a facility in the exports zone in Gujarat, which would be ready soon.
