Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday informed Lok Sabha that the state-run telecom firm BSNL is planning to install 1.12 lakh towers with indigenous 4G telecom network throughout the country.

“The 4G telecom network is ready to roll out soon and it is developed in India by Indian engineers and scientists. Our development of 4G network is being appreciated worldwide and it has a core network, radio network with full telecom equipment,” he said during Question Hour.

BSNL is in the process of ordering 6,000 towers immediately and then 6,000 more and finally 1 lakh will be installed all over the country for 4G, he said.

The development of 5G technology is going on in parallel and will be ready in a few months, he added.

To a question on availability of 4G internet service in trains, the Minister said if a train runs with the speed of 100 km per hour, communications get disrupted with 4G technology. Therefore, once the 5G network is rolled out, internet connection inside trains will be available.

The Minister said that the Telecom Service Providers fiberise their Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) installed on mobile towers and 7,93,551 BTSs have been connected by optical fibre in the country as on February 1, 2022.

Another question on call drops, the Minister said all telecom operators except state-owned telecom firm BSNL, only in one circle, have been complying with call drop norms.

"As per PMR for Cellular Mobile Telephone Services for the quarter ending December - 2021 of TRAI, all TSPs (telecom service providers) except BSNL in one LSA (West Bengal) are complying with both the benchmarks related to drop call rate (DCR)," the minister said.
