Demat securities up 24% in FY'12

Quantity of demat securities grew by nearly 24 per cent to over 71,000 crore units in the last fiscal, although a downturn in markets led to a decline in the number and value of shares transacted in the demat form.

According to Sebi, National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) and Central Depository Services
Ltd (CDSL)  together held 71,337 crore demat securities at the end of 2011-12.

These include shares of listed and unlisted companies, mutual fund units, debentures and commercial papers. Individually, at NSDL, quantity of dematerialised securities increased by 23 per cent to 57,980 crore, while it rose by 27 per cent at CDSL to 13,357 crore.
