The surge in overall food inflation is primarily spurred by rise in prices of cereals and milk. The food inflation had shown an upward trend by touching 10.86 per cent for the week ending on August 21 after a brief period of moderation in July and first half of August. Food inflation has been in double-digit for most part of the current year so far except a fortnight in mid-July when it had declined to single digit level.

The overall inflation, which also takes into account rate of change in prices of manufactured goods, breached the double digit figure in February this year through it fell to single digit at 9.97 per cent in July after a gap of five months.

The inflation stood at 10.55 per cent in June while for May it was revised upwards to 11.14 per cent from the provisional number of 10.16 per cent.
