Even as the number of Indians visiting Australia increased 7.4 per cent to 1.59 lakh for the year ended January 31, 2013, as compared to 1.48 lakh in 2011-12, the average spend per tourist declined, according to a Tourism Australia official in India.

The Country Manager-India for Tourism Australia, Nishant Kashikar, said, “The average spend was A$5,250 in 2012-13, as against A$6,200 in 2011-12. It was because majority of spends in 2011-12 were from the student segment, which decreased the next year.”
Australia received about 6.1 million tourists in 2012-13. The country had estimated tourism revenues to be A$28 billion.

India was the 10th largest inbound market for Australia in 2012-13, with revenues of A$758 million, according to Kashikar. He spoke on the sidelines of a joint promotional campaign with Malaysia Airlines for Indians travelling from New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai to Australia between April 5 and September 30 this year.

The Australian government is aiming to attract about 1.75 lakh Indian visitors in 2013-14 and 3 lakh by 2020.
