May 28 deadline to send representation on jewellery levy

After standing its ground on 1% excise duty on non-silver jewellery, the government on Monday asked jewellers to send their representation on procedural issues by May 28.

“Jewellers are welcome to send their representation on procedural issues on jewellery levy to high level committee by May 28,” Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said.

The government had last month set up a panel headed by former Chief Economic Advisor Ashok Lahiri to look into the grievances of jewellers with regard to compliance and operating procedures for payment of excise duty on jewellery.

The Committee will consider issues related to the compliance procedure for excise duty, records to be maintained, operating procedures and other relevant issues.

The other members of the Committee include legal expert Rohan Shah, Commerce Ministry Joint Secretary Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, CBEC Joint Secretary in Tax Research Unit Alok Shukla and Gautam Ray.

Jewellers had last month protested against the proposed 1% excise duty on non-silver jewellery in the Budget.
