Amid the opposition alleging “the biggest scam” in printing of two different kinds of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, an RBI statement dated December 8, had made clear its decision to issue new series of Rs 500 notes but said the notes issued earlier too would continue to be legal tender.

“The RBI will shortly issue Rs 500 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, without any inset letter, bearing signature of Governor Urjit R Patel, and the year of printing ‘2016’ printed on the reverse of the banknote,” the RBI said in a statement. on December 8.
