New Delhi: The suspense over the next Delhi chief minister could have ended on Monday with the BJP calling a meeting of its newly elected legislators to pick the leader of the legislature party.

However, it has now been confirmed that the meeting has been postponed.

The swearing-in of the council of ministers was likely to happen on February 19, but that will also have to be shifted to a later date.

In the just concluded Assembly elections, the saffron party won 48 seats in the House of 70, ousting Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party from power in the national capital.

The counting of votes was held on February 8 but the naming of the chief minister was delayed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France and the United States in the last week.

The top contenders for the Delhi chief minister’s post include former parliamentarian Parvesh Verma who defeated the AAP chief in the New Delhi constituency, which has been represented by the CM since Sheila Dikshit won from there in 1998.

Others in contention include former state unit presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay, Janakpuri MLA Ashish Sood and former Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

Though names of some sitting Lok Sabha MPs are also being discussed, party central leadership has indicated that the chief minister would be chosen from among the MLAs.

The party may also go for one or more deputy chief ministers to address its political constituency in Bihar and Punjab.
