The Delhi has sprung a surprising election result for AAP, which has been at the helm of affairs of national capital for 10 successive years from 2015, dealt a crushing blow. The BJP is set to return to power in Delhi after more than 26 years.
As the AAP, the party which was borne-out anti-corruption movement in 2013, stared at a loss, it also saw its top leadership, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia crumbling.
According to the Election Commission trends when filing this copy, of the 70 Assembly seats, BJP has won 40 and was leading on another 8, while the AAP won 18, and was leading on 4. The Congress which had ruled for 15 years under Sheila Dikshit, came up nought in the bipolar contest.
Here we take a look at how the candidates with criminal records fared in their high-stake battle for national capital:
According to the data released by the poll rights body ADR earlier before Delhi went to polls, out of 699 candidates contesting the elections, 118 have declared criminal cases against themselves and among them, 71 candidates face serious criminal charges, including corruption, rioting and violent offenses.
Among the candidates with the highest number of criminal cases are Amanatullah Khan (AAP) with 19 cases, Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) with 15 cases and Mohd. Tahir Hussain (AIMIM) with 11 cases.
Amanatullah Khan, who contested from Okhla on AAP ticket, won in Okhla with a margin of 23,639 votes, while BJP candidate Manish Chaudhary came second with 65,304 votes.
Amanatullah Khan, who has consistently won Okhla seat for AAP since 2015, had the highest number of criminal cases declared in this election, topping the chart with 19 cases.
For AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, who had the second highest number of criminal cases, it was a tantalising seesaw before BJP's Parvesh Sahib Singh claimed victory. Kejriwal's lead kept swinging and as the day progressed, Kejriwal lost the election in New Delhi seat for 4089 votes.
It was again AAP's top gun Satyendar Jain, who came 3rd on the candidates with highest number of criminal cases. He also suffered defeat in the Shakur Basti constituency with his BJP rival Karnail Singh claiming victory with 20998 lead.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) fielded northeast Delhi riots-accused Tahir Hussain in Mustafabad. He had 11 cases against him as per the report published by ADR. The BJP's Mohan Singh Bisht won from Mustafabad with 85215 votes. Tahir Hussain secured 33,474 votes and finished as the second runner-up in the Assembly race.
The fifth candidate with highest number of criminal cases was AAP's Akhilesh Patil Tripathi, who contested from Model Town. He has lost to BJP's Ashok Goel for 13415 votes.
