The leader who emerged as the giant killer in the prestigious seat is BJP's Parvesh Verma, who is leading by 4,089 votes at the time of filing this report. Congress’s Sandeep Dixit, son of former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, has been pushed to a distant third with just 4,541 votes.

This marks the second time the BJP has won the New Delhi Assembly seat. Incidentally, it was the same seat where Kejriwal ended the 15-year rule of Congress in 2013 by defeating Sheila Dikshit.

Known to have strong roots in the national capital, the two-time West Delhi MP and former Mehrauli MLA is believed to have built a base by promising houses to slum dwellers, providing infrastructure, 50,000 government jobs, flyovers, and a pollution-free national capital.

In addition to the state-wide wave that powered the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections, his connection to the Jat community and his lineage as the son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma also worked in his favor.

Parvesh had started doing social work in the constituency and began his campaign in mid-January. His supporters had already been projecting him as the next Delhi CM.

Summarising his achievement, Parvesh said, “The darkness went away, the sun rose, the lotus bloomed. Delhi has chosen development. This victory is a victory of Delhi's faith. This victory is for the future of Delhi.”

“I am grateful to our esteemed Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, Home Minister Shri @AmitShah ji, National President Shri @JPNadda ji for their leadership, the hard work of every Bharatiya Janata Party worker, and the trust of the people of Delhi. Congratulations to all the people of Delhi for this new dawn!” he added.
