The Election Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi for allegedly saying at a rally in Madhya Pradesh that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had enacted a new law which would allow firing bullets on tribal people.

The EC wrote to Rahul Gandhi that his statement was found to be in violation of the model code of conduct. The poll-panel asked him to submit his explanation within 48 hours. Rahul had allegedly made the statement at an election rally at Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh on April 23.

The EC acted on the complaint lodged by the BJP.

Earlier, the Election Commission had concluded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not violated its instructions by urging first-time voters at Latur in Maharashtra on April 9 to dedicate their votes to the defence personnel who had carried out India's February 26 air strike on a terror camp in Pakistan.
