Election to the Jayanagar assembly constituency in Bengaluru has been postponed following the death of incumbent legislator and BJP candidate B N Vijaykumar, poll authorities said Friday.

Karnataka is scheduled to go to polls on May 12.

Vijaykumar, a senior BJP leader was hospitalized after he suffered a cardiac arrest while campaigning on Thursday. He died early Friday morning.

Vijaykumar (59) was a two-time MLA from Jayanagar and a bachelor. He was up against Congress’ Sowmya Reddy, the daughter of Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

“Given that the election process in the constituency is already underway and a candidate of a national party has died, the election date has been postponed until further orders as per Section 52 of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951,” the Jayanagar assembly constituency returning officer stated in an order.
