Against The Sun

Based on a true story, Brain Falk’s Against The Sun had all the ingredients to make it a masterly cinema of survival and camaraderie.
But despite the inspirational tale of resilience and perseverance, the film doesn’t engage, given it is entirely conversational.
Against The Sun spotlights three men in a life raft adrift in high seas. It tries to explore the extent to which disparate humans, thrown together, will endure to survive desperate situations, but fails in the bid. The three men in question are pilot Harold Dixon, bomber Tony Pastula and radioman Gene Aldrich, who find themselves with “no food, no flares, no water, no supplies,” and none to rescue them. Nothing works in this gritty tale of human gumption to fight elements around to reach safe shores. Everything in the rudderless film goes about in routine fashion, predictable and prosaic, making it a tiresome watch.
