The Punjab Police on Friday booked rapper, actor and music director Honey Singh for singing vulgar songs. The decision came after the government invited severe criticism from the Punjab and Haryana High Court division bench on May 14, which questioned Punjab’s inaction against the singer despite a complaint.

The police have booked him under Section 294 of the IPC which deals with singing, reciting or uttering obscene songs, ballads or words, in or near public places. The charges against him are bailable.

“We have registered a case against Honey Singh for his vulgar songs following the high court directions,” Superintendent of Police S S Bhangoo said on Friday. Singh had sung the controversial song “Main Hoon Balatkari (I am a rapist)” at a party, inviting a complaint and a PIL in the high court.
