Health remindersThe oldest of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) turned 60 last year. According to a 2023 India Ageing Report by UN Population Fund (UNFPA), those above 60 will make up for 20.8 per cent of the country's population by 2050. Healthy ageing, therefore, becomes a priority.

If you are part of this demographic, here are some reminders to help you age in a healthy manner:

Monitor your blood sugar levels

Get your fasting and post-prandial blood sugar levels checked. If you are a diabetic, don’t skip your prescribed medications and ensure that your levels are within what is considered a normal range for your age. Maintain a healthy diet and stay away from sweet treats and high glycemic index foods.

Get some regular exercise

Ensure that you get your regular dose of exercise. Even a regular 30-minute walk works wonders. A short 10-minute walk after a meal will lower your blood sugar levels and keep you fit. Seek your doctor’s advice, and start some strength training, if you can as well.

Take care of your bone health

A Vitamin D crisis looms in India and not just among seniors; make sure you get a bone density test. Talk to your medical practitioner and see if you need supplementation. Experts say that UV-B exposure is important for production of vitamin D, so getting enough sunshine between 10 am and 3 pm helps.

Don’t miss out on health screenings

Make sure you show up for that annual check-up, or the half-yearly one. Get yourself screened for cardiac issues, cancer and diabetes. An early diagnosis, timely treatment and lifestyle changes go a long way in managing all these health conditions.

Cultivate a sense of belonging

A sense of community and belonging helps you cope with anxiety and loneliness. Participating in some way, small or big, in a book club, a knitting group or a music lovers’ community helps you build connections and beat loneliness.
