Twelve people were reportedly killed when a bus fell into a roadside pit and caught fire near Motihari on Thursday.

The bus was on its way to New Delhi from Samastipur when it met with an accident on NH28.

At least six passengers were charred to death. Those seriously injured were rushed to Motihari Sadar Hospital and Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur where the victims are said to be recuperating.

Unofficial sources, however, put the death toll at 25. The ill-fated bus, with UP registration number, was carrying 35 passengers.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the deaths. The Disaster Management Department, which confirmed 12 deaths, has announced Rs 4 lakh each as compensation to the kin of those killed.
