At least 18 Army personnel were injured, seven of them critically, in an “accidental” blast at the Army battle school in Khrew area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday.

Reports said the blast took place inside the Corps battle school, when soldiers were undergoing training at about 8:45 am, injuring 18 soldiers. Nearly 12 of the injured were airlifted to Army’s 92-base hospital at Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar.

Defence spokesman Col N N Joshi confirmed the incident and said the facts and circumstances that led to the blast were being ascertained. “While prima facie it looks like an accidental blast, but sabotage in such cases can’t be ruled out,” he said and added it will be premature to say anything at this point of time.

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered into the incident to ascertain the exact cause of the blast.
