At least 20 people went missing after a boat carrying about 200 people capsized in a river in Assam’s Kamrup (rural) district on Monday afternoon.

A massive search operation was launched at Chaigaon by National Disaster Response Force. While most of the people swam to safety, the fate of the missing is still not known.

According to police sources, a local mechanised boat  with nearly 200 passengers on board met with an accident in Kalahi river at  Sampupara area of Chaigaon in Kamrup Rural district. The boat was travelling from Goroimari to Gumi to a boat race competition.

Eyewitnesses said that the boat capsized within a minute after it hit a wooden bridge over the river and all the passengers fell into the river. Before that the engine failed and the boat lost control. It capsized within minutes.
