The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the 2G scam on Wednesday got a fresh lease of life as the Lok Sabha unanimously agreed to give the panel an extension beyond the ongoing Monsoon Session.
This is the sixth extension to the JPC set up in March 2011.
The term of the panel, chaired by Congress MP P C Chacko, has been extended till the end of the Winter Session.
Though the term of the 30-member committee was scheduled to end on September 6, Chacko moved a resolution in the Lok Sabha which was adopted unanimously.
Last week, the reconstitution of the JPC was mired in war of words between the Treasury Benches and opposition. The bone of contention was the nomination of two members to the panel which had a vacancy of two seats.
The motion to appoint Pradip Bhattacharya (Congress) and Ashok Ganguly (Nominated) to the Committee was adopted by voice vote amid the din created by BJP members who argued that the move will affect the balance of the panel.
The Committee now has 12 members of the ruling UPA – Congress-11 and NCP-1– one each from the SP and the BSP, the outside supporters of the UPA while the Opposition camp has 12 members. The JD-U, which recently parted ways with the BJP, has two members.
The JPC has 20 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.
