Three unidentified militants were killed while five security personnel were wounded in an ongoing encounter in Mujgund area on the outskirts of Srinagar on Saturday.

The gunfight broke out in the evening when security forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) in Ghat mohalla of Mujgund after inputs about the presence of some militants in the area.

“As the cordon was tightened, the militants fired at the forces, triggering a gunfight. In the initial firing, three policemen were injured,” sources said and added the injured included three J&K police personnel, an armyman and a CRPF man.

They said that four houses were blasted by the security forces during the gunfight and all the three militants hiding in the area were killed. However, police said, the operation is going on and no militant body has been recovered so-far.

One of the slain militants is believed to be 9th class student, Mudasir Ahmad from Hajin town of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, whose purported picture with an AK-47 rifle had gone viral on social networking sites last week.

Reports said intense clashes erupted near the gunfight site after locals staged protests to disrupt the anti-militant operation.
