The women tried to raise an alarm, but were too far off from the hotel and the beach was otherwise deserted, the police said.

Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas said the three women, all students from a Delhi college, approached the Calangute police station after the incident at 11:30 pm and a case was registered. Because the beach was not illuminated, the women could provide only a sketchy description of the two assailants.

The two men not only molested the women, they also forcibly took all the money they had on them. The women who were staying at the Goan Heritage Hotel, Candolim, decided to take an after-dinner walk on the beach. They were so badly shaken by the assault, they didn’t even want to register a complaint. They were advised to do so by the police.

“We are increasing the patrolling on beaches and have asked the director, tourism to ensure the beaches are better illuminated,” Gawas said. The Goa police have been pushing for beaches to be shut down at night and for bars to wind up at 11 pm. “The lobby operating on the coastal belt is so strong that our advice is being ignored,” an officer said.
