Officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday seized over 33 kg of gold worth more than Rs 12 crore from a house in the Triplicane area of the city.

Acting on a tip off, a special team raided the house of Tamim Ansari and seized the gold, which was allegedly smuggled from Sri Lanka. DRI sources said the gold was brought to Chennai from the Nagapattinam coastal area in a truck.

The accused, who owns a shop at Burma Bazaar in the Parry’s corner area, has allegedly supplied large amounts of gold to various politicians during the polls.

The DRI is trying to ascertain whether Ansari is involved in hawala trade in the state.
