“A two-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident and submit its report within two days,” official sources here said, adding five employees of the Regional Transport Office have also been suspended.

The State Human Rights Commission has also issued notices to senior police officials of seeking an explanation as to why a case under section 302 (murder) of the IPC was not registered against the guilty.

Meanwhile, the UP Transport Union has threatened to go on strike if the guilty were not arrested by the police within the next two days.

A truck driver Anantlal Gupta was allegedly beaten to death by some transport department employees in Chandauli district, about 300 kilometres from here after he refused to pay them bribe for allowing his vehicle to pass.

The incident had triggered widespread protests with truckers blocking traffic and indulging in heavy stone pelting at the police when the latter tried to lift the blockade.
