An uproar has forced the Daman and Diu administration to withdraw a controversial order asking women employees to tie rakhis to their male colleagues on Rakshabandhan.

The circular issued by Deputy Secretary (Personnel) Gurpreet Singh of the Union Territory said it has been decided by the administration to celebrate Rakshabandhan on August 7.

“In this connection, all offices and departments shall remain open and celebrate the festival collectively at a suitable time wherein all the lady staff shall tie rakhi to their colleagues,” read the circular, issued on Tuesday.

However, it triggered a backlash, with employees and public criticising it. The administration then decided to withdraw the circular.
