More than a week after he allegedly lured over 250 Muslims to convert to Hinduism in Agra town, Nand Kishore Valmiki, the main accused was taken into police custody on Tuesday.
According to police sources here, Valmiki was nabbed from Sadar area in Agra following a tip-off. The police had announced a reward of Rs 12,000 on Valmiki’s arrest and a non-bailable warrant (NBW) had also been issued against him by a local court in Agra.
The police, in a bid to create pressure on Valmiki, who had been absconding after the “mass conversion” programme, had picked up his son and a relative from Etah district on Monday.
Valmiki had a criminal history and he had been arrested with two others a few years back
under Shaganj police station area in Agra on the Rajasthan border after a large quantity of illegal foreign made liquor was seized from his vehicle. He was also once arrested under the Gangster Act in another matter by the Agra police. Both cases are pending in the courts.
The “mass conversion” issue triggered a controversy with the opposition parties attacking the BJP government at the Centre and demanding stern action against saffron outfits. An FIR has been lodged in Agra in this connection.
