The victory comes as a morale booster to party cadres, as their leader J Jayalalithaa was deposing in a Bangalore court in disproportionate asset case involving her, her confidante Sasikala and others. Celebrations were low key in the ADMK camp as they await ‘Amma’s’ home coming.

Even as the DMK for a second time in less than five months was drubbed by the AIADMK, the former’s campaign plank to “teach a lesson to the undemocratic and dictatorial ways” of the present Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa, came a cropper as the DMK is yet to regain its lost ground.

The AIADMK candidate M Paranjothi defeated his nearest DMK rival and former State Transport Minister K N Nehru, by a comfortable margin of 14, 684 votes in the results declared by the Election Commission.
