The second campus of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, that will initially provide out-door patient service to 1,000 people every day, has come to life on Saturday.

Located at Badsha village in Jhajhar district beyond Gurgaon, AIIMS-2 will be completed in the next five-six years, housing two national centres on cancer and heart diseases along with a full fledged hospital for which Haryana government had provided 300 acres of land.

The Rs 2,100-crore national cancer institute will have facilities to deal with various types of cancers as well as research.

Setting up of the second campus is expected to take away a part of the load on AIIMS, which is crumbling under an ever increasing number of patients arriving from all over the country. About 8-10 thousand people are seen by doctors in more than 50 departments at AIIMS every day.

Inaugurating the OPD clinic of AIIMS-2, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said OPD would provide generic medicines free of cost to all for a month.

From registration to prescription, the entire OPD operations will be computerised and all patient records will be kept in electronic format. The OPD at AIIMS-2 comprises general medicine, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, anasthesia and general surgery. Besides, it will also have diagnostic and laboratory facilities.

Behind schedule

However, the new OPD at Badsha is almost three months behind schedule. While laying the foundation for OPD clinic in May, Azad stated that it would be ready by August.
The green field development of the second campus will run almost parallel to setting up of six AIIMS type tertiary care hospitals in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh.

Work is in full swing in all the six hospitals as well as in the accompanyig medical colleges, which received the first batch of 50 MBBS students each in September, 2012.
