Akhilesh govt may revoke Durga Nagpal's suspension

Facing all round attack from different quarters, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav could revoke the suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, who had been suspended last month by the UP government allegedly for taking on the sand mafia in Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) district.

Although the officials here remain tight lipped about the reports, according to the sources, the government could consider reinstating the officer in the wake of the flak it had been receiving from different quarters.

Sources said the chief minister feels that by not succumbing to the pressure by the IAS Association as well as the Centre, the State government had succeeded in sending a strong message to them.

“Akhilesh has shown that he will not bow to the pressure,” said a senior Samajwadi Party leader here.

Sources said Durga Nagpal had already submitted her reply to the charge sheet served on her. She has claimed that she was innocent. “Her reply is being examined,” remarked a senior official but refused to say anything further.

Sources said Nagpal had, in her five-page reply, claimed that she had acted as per the procedures laid down and was not at fault. She has also sought revocation of her suspension.

The government, ignoring pleas from different quarters to reinstate the honest official, served a charge sheet on her seeking her reply within a fortnight. The officials here had termed the charge sheet a ‘weak’ one and said that it lacked facts.

“Weak charge sheet could also be the reason behind the consideration,” said another official.

The bureaucratic circles also cited the reports of the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) and the district magistrate of GB Nagar which have given a clean chit to her.

The LIU report, that was received by the state government almost immediately after the wall of the under-construction mosque at Kadalpur village in Gautam Buddh Nagar district (Noida) was demolished, revealed that Durga Nagpal was not even present when the incident had taken place.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had justified the suspension and said the officer had acted in a careless manner and her action could have disturbed communal amity in the state.

The district magistrate of GB Nagar had also given a clean chit to Nagpal in the matter. Incidentally the DM’s report said that the wall of the mosque had been demolished by the villagers themselves after they were told that its construction was illegal.
