Hyderabad: In a suspected honour killing, a woman constable was allegedly hacked to death by her brother in Ibrahimpatnam of the Ranga Reddy district on Monday.
Kongara Nagamani, 27, a resident of Raipole, had married Bandari Srikanth, 28, who comes from another caste, only last month against the wishes of her family.
While Nagamani belonged to the Backward Classes (BC), Srikanth comes from Scheduled Caste Mala.
She was posted at Hayathnagar police station and has been staying in Hayathnagar along with Srikanth. It was Nagamani's second marriage, as she divorced her first husband two years ago.
On Sunday, Nagamani went to her native place, Raipole, and was on her way to the police station for duty on Monday morning when her younger brother Paramesh, 24, hit her bike with his car and subsequently allegedly hacked her to death with a knife. She was suspected to have died on the spot. Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
“She was returning from her village to the police station to resume her duties on Monday morning. As she approached Raipole- Manneguda Road, someone hit her bike and then hacked her to death. We suspect it was her brother who had killed her. Investigation is on,” said circle inspector B Satyanarayana.
It is learnt that Nagamani was married to another person 10 years ago. It was an arranged marriage from the same caste. However, due to differences, she left her husband within months of her marriage and started living separately. Officially, both got divorced in 2022. After almost eight years of love, both Nagamani and Srikanth had married in Yadagirigutta last month.
"I called my wife and had a conversation with her. Suddenly I overheard a sound. She said her brother Paramesh had come and hit her bike with his car. He was against our marriage. Just before I lost the connection, Nagamani was on the phone, accusing her brother of killing her. Then I lost the call. Feeling uneasy, I asked a nearby friend to rush to the scene. He went to the spot and reported that she was in a pool of blood. Meanwhile, I too reached the spot,” said Srikanth in his complaint to the police.
