A Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant, hailing from Pulwama district of south Kashmir, Sunday laid down arms and returned to the mainstream, police said.

“One more youth from Pulwama who was part of terror outfit JeM has shunned the path of violence & returned to the mainstream with the efforts of family and Police (sic),” police said in a tweet.

Police did not reveal the identity of the militant, saying “the identity stands protected.” “His identity is protected. We wish him all the best. @JmuKmrPolice.”

Last week another local youth from the same district shunned militancy and returned to the mainstream. More than a dozen militants have laid down their arms and joined the mainstream in Kashmir since footballer-turned-militant Majid Khan surrendered before Army in November 2017 in neighbouring Anantnag district.

The security agencies have set up helplines to facilitate homecoming of local militants, who are willing to quit violence. In the last 15-years, Jammu and Kashmir government announced two rehabilitation policies for former militants.

In 2004, rehabilitation policy was announced for those militants active in the state while the second, which was launched in 2010, focused on militants from Kashmir living in Pakistan and who desired to return to the Valley.
