The Cyberabad police busted a notorious gang involved in an international racket in the skimming and cloning of credit and debit cards, by apprehending five persons most of them IT professionals, and recovered electronic equipment, Audi and Chevrolet cars, and a cash of Rs 5,00,000.
Lured by the offer of free recharge of SIM cards for Rs 250, several customers at In orbit Mall near the hi-tech city in May 2011 enrolled themselves as members of Make-A-Deal scheme by paying Rs 50 through debit and credit cards, but least did they know that they were falling prey to fraudsters.
Even as Madhapur (under Cyberabad) police registered a case, similar fraud took place at City Center in Banjara hills during the same month in which lakhs of rupees were siphoned of. A special team which was formed to track the fraudsters, finally apprehended Polavaram Kamal Kumar (B Tech, MBA), web designers Ammar Ali and Zameer Shaik, and Ajay Lal Mathur, a hotel waiter and Sha Jamal of Bihar.
The gang were running a special lab for skimming and cloning of debit and credit cards as a small scale industry unit. They had also developed contacts with one Bala of Canada and obtained skimmed data of Canada and other European countries.
The gang cloned the cards and used them to withdraw money which ran to a few lakhs of rupees since 2007.
