Agitated over the firing, thousands of aspirants went on the rampage setting ablaze a railway cabin and ransacking the Chandauli railway station.

This brought the movement of trains on the busy Moghalsarai-Gaya section to a halt, police sources here said.

The trouble erupted after some aspirants alleged irregularities in the physical test during the drive.

The recruitment drive was being held at the Mahendra Polytechnic College grounds in Chandauli.

The aspirants indulged in heavy stone pelting. This prompted the Army to open fire to disperse them resulting in a stampede like situation, sources said.

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The Uttar Pradesh government also rushed the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police and Commissioner of Varanasi division to control the situation.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said that the state government would be writing to the Union Ministry of Defence with a view to coordinate with the state officials whenever they plan such recruitment drives so that such incidents did not recur.
