Army on Friday foiled an attack by a Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, killing two militants.
Defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said the BAT action was aimed against an Indian Army patrol along the LoC. "Two BAT terrorists have been killed; and the operation is still on,” he said.
According to police sources, the bodies of the two slain militants were lying in no man's land along the LoC. They said the BAT action was foiled between Gwaltan and Uroosa in Uri sector.
On May 1, n a provocative attack, Pakistani BAT had crossed into the Indian territory near the LoC in Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district in Jammu killing two Indian soldiers and mutilating their bodies. The mutilation of bodies triggered fresh tension along the LoC and days later the Army carried out an assault on Pakistani posts which were “aiding cross-border infiltration.”
The primary task of the BAT, which usually consists of Pak Army commandos and dreaded terrorists from Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad outfits, is to dominate the LoC by carrying out disruptive actions in the form of surreptitious raids.
A senior Army official said short and swift raids by BAT are not a new phenomenon and have been carried at regular intervals along the LoC in the last several years. "The BAT teams usually have four to 10 people as Pakistan army encourages such action along the LoC," he said.
"The rogue BAT teams have hit India hard on many occasions. However,now the Indian army is alert to foil the BAT team actions along the LoC and give them a befitting reply. Today's response in Uri sector is the proof how alert Indian army is along the LoC," the officer revealed.
