Acting chairman Arunendra Kumar on Wednesday took over as chairman of the Railway Board. He has been holding the additional charge since July1, besides his regular posting as Member (Mechanical).

Appointments to the Railway Board came under the scanner of the Central government following the cash-for-appointment episode during Pawan Kumar Bansal’s tenure as the railway minister. It led to the arrest of a newly-appointed member, besides Bansal’s nephew.
Kumar was appointed the acting chairman for three months.

He was given a one-month extension. The appointment committee of the Cabinet then approved his name for a regular appointment.

An officer of the 1976 batch of the Indian Railways Service of Mechanical Engineers, Kumar has been in charge of maintenance of a variety of locomotives, coaches and wagons during a 35-year career.
