He had nursed a desire in his heart to lead India in his 100th test match as well. Yet, that was not to be.

Expressing a fond wish, former Indian team captain Mohammad Azharuddin said if the Trinamool Congress and Congress alliance seizes power from the ruling Marxists in West Bengal, it would be akin to the satisfaction that he would have derived from playing his hundredth Test match.

“I’ve played 99 Test matches for the country. If the TC-Congress combine comes to power, it will amount to my playing the coveted hundredth test,” the cricketer-turned-Congress MP told an election rally in Howrah on Monday.

Addressing a crowded rally, Azharuddin claimed that the Trinamool-Congress alliance government would surely work for rural development, better healthcare, improved education system, vast employment opportunities for youth and promotion of sports besides other areas in the state.

Later, speaking to reporters in the city here, Azharuddin said that the Left Front government has “failed” on all fronts. “For its overall failure, the government must go. If any government fails to perform in 34 years, there should be a change and the best alternative is the Trinamool Congress and Congress alliance,” he said.

To a question on CPM’s allegation of using black money for election purpose by the Trinamool Congress, he said if the Marxists had any proof, they should place that before the Election Commission.
